Update — September 30, 2026: the expected freighter deal has now been confirmed. Ethiopian Airlines has placed a firm order for 10 Boeing 777 freighters: eight 777-8Fs and two current-generation 777Fs. Read AeroSillage’s full updated analysis of the confirmed order.
Ethiopian Airlines’ possible new 777 freighter order is fundamentally a fleet-transition decision. The carrier needs near-term cargo capacity from today’s 777F while preparing for the future 777-8F and a much larger logistics platform around Addis Ababa and Bishoftu.
Why a mixed order makes sense
Current-generation 777Fs are available sooner and already fit Ethiopian’s operating model. The 777-8F promises better efficiency, but its timing is tied to the wider 777X programme.
Cargo is central to Ethiopian’s economics
The group already carries large volumes of perishables, industrial goods and express freight between Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Cargo therefore supports the wider hub strategy rather than sitting beside it.
Bishoftu changes the scale
The future airport project points to significantly greater passenger and freight capacity. Fleet decisions taken now are therefore being made with the 2030s in mind.
The key risk is timing
If next-generation freighters are delayed, Ethiopian still needs enough lift to support network growth. A bridge fleet reduces that risk.
AeroSillage view: Ethiopian is building cargo as a system: aircraft, hub infrastructure and intercontinental network all reinforce one another.
