Myanmar: Mandalay airport reopens after drone attack

Myanmar: Mandalay airport reopens after drone attack

Mandalay International Airport has resumed operations after the drone attack reported on September 10, 2026. The airport’s operations-control center says flights are again running normally.

Traffic resumes after precautionary closure

The airport had been closed after a drone attack in the Tada-U area, which includes both the civilian airport and military facilities. Myanmar Airways International was among carriers affected by the suspension.

Six explosive-laden FPV drones reported

Myanmar state media said six FPV drones carrying explosives targeted the Tada-U airport area. Authorities said counter-drone systems detected and intercepted the devices and reported no casualties or runway damage.

Resistance forces claim responsibility

The People’s Defense Force, linked to the opposition National Unity Government, claimed the attack and said it targeted the military side of the site rather than civilian infrastructure. Competing casualty and damage claims could not all be independently verified.

Why it matters

Mandalay is one of Myanmar’s main civilian aviation hubs and is located in a region deeply affected by the country’s civil conflict. The reopening reduces the immediate operational risk but does not remove the wider security concern. Authorities still need to establish what happened, assess whether further protective measures are required and determine whether renewed restrictions could become necessary.
