Marrakech in October: flights, budget and where to stay

Less than four hours from Paris, Marrakech combines autumn sunshine, heritage, food, riads, large hotels and dense air links. Around the 2026 autumn school holidays, it is one of the easiest warm-weather city breaks from France, Belgium, Switzerland and Luxembourg, with seasonal options from Québec as well.

This AeroSillage guide looks at the trip from a passenger’s perspective: flights, entry rules, airport transfers, neighbourhoods, budgets and the experiences worth prioritising.

Why October works so well

The French autumn school holidays run from 17 October to 2 November 2026. Marrakech fits the period well because autumn is far more comfortable than midsummer for walking in the medina, visiting gardens or making day trips toward the Atlas Mountains and the Agafay desert.

Air connectivity is also improving. Morocco’s tourism authorities announced additional France–Morocco capacity for winter 2026-27, including more routes from regional French cities, and Marrakech benefits directly from that growth.

Ideal stay: three to five days for a first visit, or a week for families or travellers adding an Atlas excursion.

Passport and visa rules

French travellers need a passport valid for the full stay. A national identity card alone is no longer sufficient for entry to Morocco. French nationals do not need a visa for a tourist stay of under 90 days.

Children need their own valid passport. Depending on who is accompanying them, extra parental or family documentation may be useful. Travellers should verify their own case before departure.

One point often forgotten: bringing a drone into Morocco requires prior authorisation. A drone found in baggage can be confiscated and may lead to penalties.

Marrakech-Menara Airport: close to the city

Marrakech-Menara Airport (RAK) is only around 3 km from the centre. Taxis are available outside the terminal, and a city-airport bus service also operates. A pre-booking/prepayment system helps make taxi pricing more transparent.

Official tourism information has quoted reference taxi prices of around MAD70 by day and MAD100 at night between the airport and central areas, although local tariffs should always be checked at the time of travel.

Flights from the main francophone markets

France: Paris has nonstop service with Air France, Royal Air Maroc and easyJet, among others. Bordeaux, Lyon, Lille, Nantes and Nice also feature in winter programmes depending on airline and season.

Belgium: Brussels South Charleroi has direct Ryanair service to Marrakech, with some October one-way fares seen from around €30. TUI also markets Marrakech from Belgium.

Switzerland: Geneva is one of the main French-speaking departure points. easyJet includes Geneva–Marrakech in its 2026 programme, while Basel and Zurich can provide alternatives.

Luxembourg: Luxair sells Marrakech as part of its leisure network, with schedules depending on the season.

Québec: Montréal has seasonal nonstop Air Transat service, while Royal Air Maroc also connects Montréal with Marrakech through its Moroccan network.

How much can flights cost?

Prices change quickly, but fare calendars give an indication. On 23 September 2026, AeroSillage observed October Paris–Marrakech returns from around €125 with Air France and around €126 with Royal Air Maroc. Some easyJet one-way fares appeared near €50 before bags and extras.

During autumn holidays, compare the total trip cost, not just the airfare. A slightly more expensive flight from your nearest airport can still be cheaper than travelling to Paris once rail fares, parking or an airport hotel are added.

Where to stay

Medina: best for immersion, with riads, souks and major historic sites on foot. Access with luggage can be awkward in narrow lanes, so a riad-arranged transfer is useful for a first arrival.

Guéliz: modern, practical and easy to navigate, with cafés, shops and straightforward taxi access. A good first-time base for families and travellers wanting a mix of old and new Marrakech.

Hivernage: stronger for upscale hotels and comfort, while remaining close to the medina.

Palmeraie: better for resort-style stays with pools and space, but expect more frequent and longer trips into the centre.

Family, couple or solo?

Families: avoid overloading each day. A garden in the morning, medina later in the day and a calmer hotel day often works better than trying to see everything. Guéliz, Hivernage or an easily accessible riad can simplify logistics.

Couples: a medina riad, terrace dinner, hammam and evening around Jemaa el-Fna make a strong four-day itinerary. Agafay also works well as a half-day or evening excursion.

Solo travellers: prepare the first arrival carefully. An offline map, the exact riad address and a pre-arranged transfer reduce stress in the medina. Guéliz is simpler if you prefer a more conventional urban layout.

What not to miss

  • Jemaa el-Fna in late afternoon and after dark.
  • Koutoubia, the city’s major landmark.
  • Bahia Palace for architecture and decoration.
  • Ben Youssef Madrasa, one of the medina’s major historic sites.
  • Jardin Majorelle, best booked ahead in busy periods.
  • Agafay desert for a half-day or evening.
  • High Atlas for a full-day excursion.

Food and useful addresses

NOMAD, near the Spice Square, is a modern option with a terrace and contemporary Moroccan cooking. Le Jardin combines a leafy courtyard with Moroccan and European influences. Amal Guéliz is a good lunch option linked to a social project training women in hospitality. Beldi Country Club, outside the centre, is better for a slower break away from the medina.

Money, cards and exchange

The currency is the Moroccan dirham (MAD). On 23 September 2026, the market rate was around €1 = MAD10.9 and CAD1 = MAD6.8. These are only reference rates; banks and exchange offices apply their own margins and fees.

Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants and modern shops, but cash remains useful in souks, smaller businesses, some taxis and for tips.

When a card terminal offers conversion into your home currency, paying in MAD is usually more transparent if your bank’s foreign exchange fees are reasonable.

How much should you budget?

Marrakech can be affordable or very high-end. Accommodation is the biggest variable. For a couple staying in a mid-range riad, using taxis, mixing local restaurants with a few more expensive meals and booking one or two paid activities, it is better to think in terms of the total trip budget rather than isolated prices.

For flights, always compare the fare including the bag you actually need. For hotels, check taxes, breakfast, cancellation conditions and whether a car or taxi can reach the property directly.

AeroSillage tip

October is one of the easiest times to recommend Marrakech. Book flights and the most popular attractions early around the school holidays, stay somewhere that matches your travel style rather than simply choosing the cheapest hotel, and keep enough free time to enjoy the city rather than turning the trip into a checklist.
