Marrakech beyond the postcard, a travel guide for first-time visitors

Marrakech works best when a few decisions are made before arrival. Where to stay, what to book, how to spend 3, 4 or 5 days, transport, food and excursions in one practical guide.

TRAVEL GUIDE

Where you stay in Marrakech shapes almost everything that follows: how you reach your accommodation, which streets you explore on foot and how much time you lose in transit. A riad among the medina's pedestrian lanes, a conventional hotel in Gueliz and a quiet property in Hivernage lead to quite different days. Your arrival transfer, the hours you spend outdoors and the attractions worth booking are more consequential decisions than the number of sights on an itinerary.

The city's geography helps explain why. Souks, historic buildings and traditional accommodation lie around the medina, while Gueliz offers shops, restaurants and the railway station outside the walls. Hivernage is associated with quieter, hotel-oriented stays. The Moroccan National Tourist Office's Marrakech overview outlines these contrasting districts.
