Luxembourg-Findel: drones disrupt flights again

Luxembourg-Findel Airport suspended operations again on the evening of September 21 after fresh drone sightings, only three days after an earlier closure had caused 19 diversions and affected around 1,800 passengers. The second interruption lasted from 9:38 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. before traffic resumed.

What is known

Lux-Airport confirmed that unauthorised unmanned aircraft systems were first detected near the airport and later over the airfield itself. Flights were suspended as a precaution to protect passengers, crews, staff and aircraft.

According to RTL Luxembourg, the earlier incident forced 19 flights to divert, 17 of them operated by Luxair. Aircraft were sent to Cologne, Brussels, Frankfurt-Hahn, Liège, Paris, Basel and Strasbourg. About 1,800 passengers were affected.

The origin of the drones and the identity of their operators had not been established publicly at the time of publication.

A second interruption days later

Lux-Airport confirmed another suspension on September 21 between 9:38 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. after new drone sightings near Findel. Around ten flights were delayed. Some early reports mentioned diversions, while Luxair later said none had ultimately been necessary.

The repeat incident came after the Luxembourg government had already strengthened airspace surveillance with additional detection equipment and support from foreign partners.

Why it matters

Findel is Luxembourg’s only international airport, the main base of Luxair and a major European cargo hub for Cargolux. A closure therefore has an immediate impact both nationally and across neighbouring airports.

The episode also underlines how vulnerable European airports remain to unauthorised drones entering critical airspace.

What to watch

The main questions are whether the drones and their operators can be identified, whether the strengthened detection system proves effective and whether Luxembourg introduces additional counter-drone measures around Findel.
