Leeds Bradford Airport strike set for 16–18 October

Nearly 130 Leeds Bradford Airport employees are set to strike from Friday 16 October to Sunday 18 October 2026 in a dispute over pay. The action covers staff working in air traffic control, security, passenger-facing roles and cleaning. Unite says the walkout could bring the airport to a standstill, while airport management says it currently expects near-normal operations. No airport-wide cancellation programme has been published.

The strike is scheduled to begin at 03:00 on 16 October for hourly paid employees and end at 06:00 on 18 October. Air traffic control staff involved in the dispute are due to walk out from 06:00 on 16 October until 06:00 on 18 October. The range of roles involved means the dispute touches several parts of the airport operation rather than a single contractor or department.

A pay dispute with operational consequences

Pay talks have been under way since December 2025. Unite says some departments have fallen behind equivalent roles at other UK airports after employees came out of a four-year pay deal. The union argues that the airport’s latest offer does not go far enough to address those differences.

Unite describes the potential operational impact as severe. It says flights could not arrive or depart without sufficient air traffic control cover and that industrial action by security and customer-facing staff would also affect terminal operations. That is the union’s assessment of the likely consequences, not an official airport closure announcement.

Leeds Bradford Airport takes a different position. In a statement reported on 5 October, the airport said it respects employees’ right to take lawful industrial action but believes it has made a fair and responsible pay offer that is significantly above inflation. Management says its priority is to minimise disruption and that it currently expects to run near-normal operations during the strike period.

No confirmed mass cancellations yet

For passengers, the distinction matters. A strike notice identifies when industrial action can take place, but it does not by itself establish how many flights will be cancelled. Airports and airlines can introduce contingency staffing, reorganise operations or revise schedules closer to the date.

As of 5 October, Leeds Bradford Airport has not announced an airport-wide cancellation programme and has not declared that the airport will close. Passengers booked to travel between 16 and 18 October should therefore check their individual flight status with their airline rather than assume their service is cancelled.

Leeds Bradford is served by airlines including Jet2, Ryanair, easyJet, KLM, Aer Lingus, TUI, Wizz Air and SunExpress. The eventual impact will depend on participation in the strike, the airport’s contingency arrangements and airline operating decisions.

The walkout is scheduled for the same date as several aviation-sector strikes in Italy, making 16 October a particularly important day for European disruption monitoring. AeroSillage is maintaining a live October 2026 aviation strike calendar.

What remains unclear: how many air traffic controllers and other employees will participate, what contingency staffing will be available, and whether airlines will remove or retime flights. Those details will determine the actual scale of disruption as the strike approaches.
