French Mirage 2000D crashes near Nancy, one crew member dead and another missing
A French Mirage 2000D from Nancy-Ochey crashed during a training flight. One service member has died and teams are searching for the second crew member.

A French Air and Space Force Mirage 2000D crashed near Rogéville in northeastern France at around 10:40 p.m. on Tuesday, 20 October 2026. One body was recovered but had not been formally identified, while the search for the second crew member continued on Wednesday. The two-seat jet, based at Nancy-Ochey, was returning from a training mission when contact was lost.
An official statement issued on 21 October identified the aircraft as belonging to Fighter Squadron 2/3 “Champagne”, based at Nancy-Ochey Air Base 133. The statement did not establish which crew position the recovered airman had occupied.
Contact lost on the return flight
The aircraft was unarmed, Air and Space Force spokesman Colonel David Pappalardo told franceinfo, according to L’Est Républicain. The crew consisted of a young fighter pilot and an experienced weapons systems officer. Early indications suggested that at least one crew member had been unable to eject, the spokesman said, while the fate of the second remained unknown.
Henry Lemoine, mayor of Pont-à-Mousson, identified the search area as lying between Rogéville, Domèvre-en-Haye and Tremblecourt. His initial account gave a time of about 11:35 p.m., later superseded by the military’s official account of approximately 10:40 p.m. Wreckage was spotted by a drone and a command post established at Rogéville. Firefighters, gendarmes, military rescue teams from Nancy-Ochey and a helicopter joined the operation. Residents reported an explosion and a fireball, but those accounts do not explain what brought the jet down.
The Dassault Mirage 2000D is a two-seat strike aircraft used primarily for air-to-ground missions. Its crew normally consists of a pilot in the forward cockpit and a weapons systems officer behind. The search continued after the first body was found because the second crew member had not been located.
Separate safety and judicial investigations have been opened to establish what happened. At the latest official update reviewed, the second airman was still missing and the cause of the crash remained undetermined.
