France Identité: which documents let you board a flight?

France Identité: which documents let you board a flight?

France Identité has expanded what travellers can use to prove their identity at some French airport checkpoints, but it has not turned a phone into a universal travel document. The key is to separate three things: airline identity checks, domestic travel rules and border-crossing documents.

What changed in July 2026?

Since July 2026, eligible passengers can use France Identité in certain situations to present a certified digital version of their French identity document during identity checks.

But acceptance depends on the journey, the carrier and the type of control. The digital app does not automatically replace every physical document.

Which documents can let you board?

For a French traveller, the safest hierarchy remains straightforward:

  • Passport: valid for international travel where accepted by the destination.
  • French national identity card: valid for domestic travel and many European/Schengen journeys, subject to destination rules.
  • France Identité: useful for supported identity checks, but not a universal substitute for the physical card at borders.
  • Driving licence: may serve as identity proof on some domestic French flights but is not a border-crossing document.

Driving licence: identity proof, not a border document

A current French driving licence with a recognisable photo can be accepted by some airlines on strictly domestic French flights.

But it does not prove nationality and is not designed for crossing an international border. A traveller using it as a backup for a European or overseas itinerary can therefore be refused.

Carte Vitale: useful administratively, not for boarding

A Carte Vitale can help establish identity in certain French administrative procedures, and police may use it together with other information in some circumstances.

That does not make it a travel document. Airlines do not treat it as a replacement for a passport or national identity card.

What about the family record book?

The French family record book can help prove family relationships, but it does not replace each passenger’s personal identity document.

A child cannot board merely because a parent presents the family record book.

France Identité does not yet replace the passport at borders

This is the most important limitation. A digital identity in France Identité can assist with identity verification, but an international border crossing still requires the travel document demanded by the destination and route.

If the destination requires a passport, showing France Identité on a phone does not satisfy that requirement.

What about Schengen flights?

Travellers sometimes assume that “no routine border control” means “no document needed”. That is unsafe.

Airlines can still verify identity and authorities can reintroduce border controls. A passenger should therefore carry the physical identity card or passport required for the destination even on a Schengen itinerary.

And children?

Every child needs their own valid identity document appropriate to the journey. A parent’s document, France Identité account or family record book does not replace it.

Where an authorisation to leave French territory is required, it is an additional document, not a substitute for the child’s passport or identity card.

Why a phone screenshot is not enough

A photo, scan or screenshot of an identity card or passport is not the same as the official physical document or a supported certified digital identity process.

Do not rely on a picture stored in your gallery as a boarding solution.

The simplest rule

For a domestic journey, France Identité can be a useful supported identity method where the airline and control process accept it. For any journey involving a border, carry the physical passport or identity card required by the destination.

When in doubt, the physical document remains the safest option.
