Etna ash suspends arrivals at Catania Airport

Mount Etna’s renewed ash emissions are disrupting Catania-Fontanarossa Airport on Saturday, 26 September. Arrivals were suspended until 4 p.m. after an initial capacity restriction, while the volcano’s aviation alert remains at red.

What we know

Etna’s eruptive activity produced an ash plume reaching roughly four kilometres in altitude. With volcanic ash affecting nearby airspace, Catania Airport first reduced capacity to four landings per hour, compared with the usual twelve, before suspending arrivals until 4 p.m. Restrictions may change quickly depending on volcanic activity and wind direction.

Passengers should check their flight directly with their airline before travelling to Fontanarossa.

Why it matters for travellers

Volcanic ash can pose a serious hazard to aircraft engines, visibility and aircraft systems. Airports may therefore restrict arrivals or departures even when the runway itself remains usable, depending on the ash cloud’s position and official safety assessments. Such restrictions can trigger delays, diversions and cancellations that continue even after they are eased. Catania is a major gateway to eastern Sicily and handles a substantial European leisure network.

The latest disruption follows repeated Etna-related restrictions during the summer and another ash episode in mid-September, underlining the airport’s operational vulnerability when winds carry ash towards its airspace.

What to watch

Key points are the evolution of the ash plume, forthcoming VONA notices and SAC’s decisions on arrival capacity after 4 p.m. Any reopening may still leave residual delays and aircraft-positioning disruption.
