Essential aviation news, in perspective
IndiGo explores a 100-jet Embraer deal as Air India considers expanding its long-haul fleet.
India’s two largest aviation growth stories are taking different directions this week. IndiGo is considering a substantial move into regional jets, while Air India is looking for more wide-body aircraft to expand international services. Neither airline has announced a firm new order.
IndiGo explores Embraer deal for 100 regional jets
IndiGo is in early talks with Embraer over a possible purchase of 100 regional aircraft, with an option for roughly 50 more, Reuters reported on 4 November, citing three people familiar with the discussions. The aircraft type and final quantity remain undecided, and there is no assurance of an agreement. Deliveries, if the deal proceeds, are unlikely to begin before 2030.
The proposal could give IndiGo greater capacity on domestic regional routes, where it currently uses ATR turboprops alongside a much larger Airbus narrow-body fleet. It would also represent a significant opening for Embraer in India, where its commercial jets have a limited presence. The manufacturers and airline have not confirmed an order. Air India considers additional long-haul aircraft
Air India chief executive Tewolde Gebremariam said on 3 November that the carrier wanted more wide-body jets as it pursues international growth. The Tata-controlled airline is modernising its fleet and cabins while trying to reduce the operating burden of older aircraft.
Reuters reported that Air India had held discussions with both Airbus and Boeing. The airline has not specified how many additional aircraft it might order, and no agreement was announced. Higher operating costs and restrictions on flights through Pakistani airspace remain challenges. Gebremariam said he expected profitability to return soon, without giving a date.
