Flight operations at Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport in Amritsar were suspended on September 7, 2026 after reports of several drones or drone-like objects near the airport’s operational area.
Seven flights diverted
The alert was raised at around 9:45–9:50 p.m. local time after information was passed to air traffic control by the Indian Air Force. Operations were suspended for roughly 85 to 90 minutes while several aircraft were already waiting to land.
Seven flights were diverted: two to Chandigarh and five to Delhi. Airlines affected included Air India, IndiGo, Air India Express and Malaysia Airlines.
Operations resume after checks
Flights resumed at about 11:15 p.m. after no further drones were observed and a crisis team judged the situation to be under control. Five of the seven diverted flights later returned to Amritsar.
Origin remains unconfirmed
Authorities opened a security investigation. The origin of the objects has not been established, and there is no credible public evidence attributing them to a specific actor.

Why airports suspend flights after drone sightings
An unidentified drone near an airport creates an immediate separation problem because controllers cannot predict its path or altitude. A short suspension gives authorities time to assess the threat and protect arriving and departing aircraft.
