New York JFK ground stop lifted after severe storms

New York JFK suffered significant disruption on September 13 as severe thunderstorms crossed the region. The FAA imposed a ground stop for flights bound for JFK before lifting it at 9:45 a.m. local time.

Ground stop, 75-minute delays and a slow recovery

The FAA held departures to JFK from around 8:18 a.m. to prevent saturation of the New York airspace while heavy rain, thunderstorms and localized flooding affected the area.

Even after the ground stop was lifted, operations did not immediately return to normal. The FAA reported average departure delays of about 75 minutes during the disruption, with conditions expected to improve gradually.

When a major hub pauses inbound traffic, aircraft waiting at origin airports must later be reinserted into the flow. That backlog can keep arrival and departure delays elevated for hours after the formal restriction ends.

What passengers should do

No prolonged airport closure was announced, but passengers were advised to check directly with their airlines because further weather-related traffic-management measures remained possible.
